About the Bell
1 Bell, 1-0-27 in B
In Gillett & Johnston's tuning book, Volume 9, it shows a single bell supplied to an unspecified building in Arundel.
It measures 18" in diameter and is tuned to the key of B.
It was hung on May 16th, 1929.
After the bell was cast, it weighed 1-1-7cwt. Tuning resulted in a loss of 10lbs, leaving it weighing 1-0-27cwt.
We are lucky to have the tuning figures for this bell, enabling us to identify the bell if heard.
Gillett's occasionally put a serial number on the bells. If this bell has one inscribed, it is 3044. The bell may also possess the date and founders name.
The most important question is, where is it. One may assume it was sent to the roman catholic cathedral, however George Elphicks gives a 38" bell cast by Taylors. Likely places include the castle, schools, and the town hall. I'm not aware of any clock towers in Arundel.
This is a long shot, but it could be the bell at Warningcamp Old School. Elphick states: "A single apparently uninscribed bell about 8" diameter, hung in an A frame with springs to check its motion."
George Elphick also lists this bell in Sussex Bells and Belfries as unfound in addition to Gillett bell No* 2663.
With great thanks to O'shea Engineering, bell 2663 has been discovered at Arundel, Convent of Poor Clares.
If anyone knows where bell 3044 is, I'd be very grateful to know.
