About the Bell
1 Bell, in C
Barcombe Cross has a single slightly long-waisted bell, hung in a timber bellcote.
The church was built as a chapel of ease to Barcombe, St Mary as it is quite a distance from the main village of Barcombe Cross. Worship took place here until 2003. It is now a communal meeting place but the furniture inside still remains.
The bell has the name OLYMPUS engraved on the waist, suggesting that it came from a ship making this church one of the handful that possess a ship's bell. It is unclear what the date of this bell is but the year c.1897 come from the age of the church although the bell could be older.
The bell is made of bronze, not brass or silver like most ships' bells.
The bell is bolted to a wooden headstock by a peg canon and is chimed by an iron lever.
The bell is rung from the ground floor using a red, white & blue sallied rope that has been bleached by the sun and has become very dusty too! When rung, it is very stiff being that it is on plain bearings. The clapper, similar to Crawley Down, has corroded and worn away quite a bit.
