About the Bell
1 Bell
St Anne's had a single bell in a stone turret, hung for swing chime.
The bell was cast by John Warner & Sons in 1862. Cast in this year, we can predict that the bell would have had a conventional canon, strapped to a wooden headstock.
The founder's name and date was around the inscription band. On the waist was the royal arms with the word PATENT underneath, very common for Warner bells of this period.
The church was designed by B. Ferrey and it cost £6964 15s 11d to build. This is a surprising cost for a church which had no more that a small stone turret which was removed in 1966.
The church struggled due to a falling congregation leading to it closing and then demolished in 1986. When Elphick visited in 1960, the bell was down and ready to be sold.
Tyssen lists:
Brighton, St Anne.
1. I Warner & Sons London 1863.
