About the Bell
1 Bell
St James had a single bell hung between brackets on the side of the church wall.
The church was built in 1810 but became Anglican in 1817 after a disagreement with the vicar of Brighton had been settled. Since the beginning, it always had a small population, so it suffered! The congregation began to rise in the 1860s but it began to fall again after the vicar passed away.
As they could not afford to keep the church running, it closed in 1948 and was demolished 2 years later.
Elphick lists:
BRIGHTON, St James. Demolished in 1950. A long ladder was required to
reach the single bell hung between brackets. The inscription given by
Tyssen was, '1818', and was cast by Thomas Mears. The church was rebuilt in
1875.
Tyssen lists:
Brighton, St James.
1. 1818.
