About the Bell
1 Bell
Residents of Broadbridge Heath would have commuted to Horsham for worship before the former church was built. Before Broadbridge Heath became its own parish, it was within the parish of Sullington. 100
Old St John's was opened in 1904 and was made of iron and wood. It contained a small bell turret with a single bell.
It was demolished in 1957 due to corrosion. 100
A new church was built in the style of a tent. It has no bell and the contractors retained the old bell. Unfotunately, there is no record as to where it went. 101
The location of the old church is where the current church hall is, slightly south of the present church.
The inscription was most likely around the soundbow and probably contained two moulding wires above it.
George Elphick lists:
BROADBRIDGE HEATH. The present church has no bell. The bell at the
previous church was inscribed:
J. WARNER & SONS LTD. LONDON 1899
11.88" (p.168), hung in a B frame under a turret until 1958 when the church
was demolished, the contractor retained the bell. Examined Sept. 1960.
Page 168 of Sussex Bell and Belfries states that the bell was cast under the owner of Robert Warner.
