Chelwood Gate, Chapel of EaseChelwood Gate has a small red brick chapel beside the main road. It was built as a chapel of ease around the time Danehill All Saints was built.
Chelwood Gate and Chelwood Common are 2 villages close to each other, located at the border of the Ashdown Forest. Both have small chapels containing a bell. The chapel was extended in 2006 to contain a toilet and kitchen. At the same time, a bell turret was added on top. |

1 Bell, 0-2-21 in F
The bell was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 2006, and is hung on metal brackets fitted either side of the belfry.
It's bolted to a metal headstock and chimed by a lever, using a red, white, and blue sallied rope.
Most modern bells are fitted with a system called a "Twiddle pin", which allows the bell to be adjusted if it becomes odd struck. Interestingly, this bell has one, and is usually only found on bells hung for full circle ringing.
The bell shows tuning marks right the way up its profile inside, and is Simpson tuned to the key of F.
It carries a short inscription on the waist, inscribed using small block roman capitals, and the foundry trademark stamp.
In the turret there is a wooden plank a pulley is attached to for the rope.
A photo below shows a block connected to the rope to restrict how high the bell is rung. In the past, the bell appears to have struck the louvre.
A 13-rung ladder is required to access the belfry through a loft hatch in the toilet. The bell is hung to your right as you go up.
The bell was in a fantastic condition when I visited.
