About the Bell
1 Bell
Chichester, St Andrew had a single bell hung in a west facing turret.
The church was built around the 13th C, but the belfry is estimated to have been erected by the 14th C.
It has supports inside with large diagonal buttresses to support it.
The belfry contains a wooden B frame for 2, suggesting there was more than 1 prior to 1864. When George Elphick visited in October 1937, there was a single bell he though was a 17th C casting.
It requires a 12 rung ladder to access the turret.
There isn't overly much we can comment on this tower, for there is no records of bells in wills, church surveys, nor presentments.
The bell is uninscribed and measures 21.13" in diameter.
It would have started its life strapped to a wooden headstock by the means of a conventional canon.
The church closed down after taking damage from the war. It remained empty until 1976 when it became an arts centre.
The bell is now at St Anne's, East Wittering.
I will update this page when I have seen in.
