About the Bells
8 Bells, 11-3-14 in G
Coleman's Hatch has a ring of 8 bells hung for full circle in a West facing tower.
The tower was built in 1913 by the English architect Arthur Conrad Blomfield who also designed the church of Forest Row about 2 miles West. Due to its large size, it has been named "the cathedral of the country".
The church was built as a result of a fall out at the church nearby at Hartfield, St Mary the Virgin. A parishioner from Hartfield fell out with the vicar and decided to construct a much larger and better church in a small Hamlet down the road in Coleman's Hatch.
- Oliver EP Watson.
The 8 bells were cast in 1913 by the Croydon foundry Gillett & Johnston. The bells are hung in a cast iron H.1 frame in a typical 8.3 layout. Each bell has the same inscription with its corresponding number at the bottom of the waist. The tenor is slightly different from the front 7 due to the fact it has an extra ring of ornaments at the lower end of the waist.
All the bells have been mounted on ball bearings since their restoration in 2021.
Up until then, the front 5 were all hung on plain bearings.
In 2021, Blyth & Co overhauled the bells by re-bushing all the clappers; the metal frame was treated and then painted; the ceiling rope guides and pulleys were replaced; the Ellacombe apparatus was also restored and new ropes were ordered for all the bells. An additional Sanctus rope was bought which is attached to bell 7 via the Ellacombe.
The restoration project was completed on 17/11/2021.
The bells are rung clockwise by red, white, and blue sallied ropes. These are attached to clamps on the wall to stop the bells from swinging when the Ellacombe is being used.
An 18 rung ladder is required to access the belfry. Originally, an 18 rung wooden vertical ladder was used but now a metal ladder can be pulled forward so that it isn't all vertical. Before the belfry is an intermediate chamber which is where the clock made by Gillett & Johnston is located. The weights fall in the southeast side of the tower and are enclosed by see-through walls. The clock is electronically wound as well as mechanically regulated. On the East side of the tower, a smaller wooden rung ladder is used to get up to the belfry. As you enter, bell 7 is above you.
The spire is completely open.
