Crawley, Town ClockThe old Crawley Town clock has a chime of 6, hung in a 27ft tower.
The clock was given as a gift to commemorate the London to Brighton veteran car race in 1965. On the walls of the clock chamber are 4 large white dials with copper hands, painted black and rectangles for numerals. Old photos of when it was in the Queen's square show the pendulum hanging down too. |

6 Bells, 1-2-14 in C
The bells were cast in 1963 by the Mears & Stainbank without canons, and the same inscription at the bottom of the waist on each bell.
Each bell is suspended on a cast iron rod which they are bolted to as they have flat heads and no canons.
Each hour, the bells would play the song Genevieve, by Larry Alder: https://youtu.be/SrGWsX3Rxe8
During the chime, small veteran cars drove around in circles too.
The only problem with the clock is that it needed frequent servicing and it was usually out of action. This made the clock unreliable and it was later removed.
Mr. Drew, the owner of the clock won the bid when it was sold. An American buyer withdrew his bid as the shipping costs were too high!
The clock now lives near the Redhill Aerodrome. There was a period when it was stored out of sight at Tilgate Forests before being transported there.
Some plans are in mind for the clock to be restored again but when that happens I will update this page.
Please note that the location on the map is not the current location of it but instead where it used to be located.
