About the Bell
1 Bell
St Peter's had a single bell hung in a cast iron frame above the porch.
The church was built in 1896 to the design by H & P Currey. £5000 was donated by the Duke of Devonshire who is also the donor of St Saviour & St Peter's tenor.
Though it was planned to have a tower, it was never built. 100
John Warner & Sons cast a single bell which was hung in a cast iron frame with wooden sills.
As there are no photographs of the bell, it is likely that this bell was hung in a V.1 frame.
It was possibly hung for swing chime with a rope.
Elphick gives the following inscription:
CAST BY JOHN WARNER & SONS LONDON W.N. / CONSTANCY 1904
Probably inscribed around the inscription band with Constancy 1904 in the waist.
A 20 rung ladder was required to access the bell. 101
The church was later demolished in 1971, a year after George published his book. 100
Most of the fittings went to Eastbourne, Holy Trinity. I can't comment on the fate of the bell of if it went here but I will update this page when I know.
