About the Bells
10 Bells, 24-1-23 In D
Eastbourne, St Saviour has a ring of 10 bells hung for full circle. The bells are hung in a West facing tower made completely out of red brick. It was made between 1867 and 1868 by George Edmund Street, English architect who specialized in the craft and design of churches.
The back 8 bells are all made by John Warner & Sons from different time periods. The back three were hung in 1875. The donor for the tenor was William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire. He moved down to Eastbourne to a house inherited from his grandfather. At the time he moved to Eastbourne, it was a town which was growing. Development of new parks, houses and places of worship. Not only did he provide us with the tenor but he also sold off some of his land to fund for a college to be erected too.
Bell 9 was in memory of George Whelpton, George Whelpton had his own family run patent medicine business called Whelpton's Pills under the business name of George Whelpton & Sons. Shortly after, the son of George Whelpton, William Whelpton was soon to be the first vicar of St Saviours.
In 1878 a treble was added and was gifted by Ellen C. Woodgate. Later another bell was added in 1877 to have a ring of 8 at a later date.
Then in 1887 3 bells, the 2,3,4, were added to complete the ring of 8. The three extra bells were given by Edna Lyall, formally known as Ada Ellen Bayly. She was a British novelist who supported the women's suffrage movement from an early age. She was born in Brighton but later lived in Surrey due to the early death of her parents. While she was living in surrey she continued to go to a private school in Brighton. In her lifetime, she wrote 18 novels. On each of the bells donated by her, an inscription of one of her character's name is on it. DONOVAN, ERICA, HUGO.
The bells from different time periods have different styles of letters, especially the ones given by Ellen.
The 8 bells were hung in a timber Z Frame, higher up the tower to what they are today. Probably arranged in the 8.3 layout.
In 1987, The 8 bells were augmented to 10 bells by the Holland foundry Eijsbouts. 23 of their bells are recording to be in Sussex with 13 of them at East Grinstead, St Swithun.
The treble is in memory of Owen Whiting who was the Vicar of St Saviour from 1962 - 1976 and the 2nd is in memory of Malcolm Mackenzie was was a previous priest and Benefactor.
During the augmentation from 8 to 10 bells. All the bells were rehung on new cast iron headstock and hung in a cast Iron frame.
All the new headstocks, bearings and the frame were made by Eayre & Smith and painted green.
The frame was also lowered down the tower to prevent the tower from moving as much and help with the draft.
The bells are hung on 2 levels:
Bells 1,3,5,6,7,8,9,0 are hung in an Z.2 frame in the standard 8.3 layout. This frame also has H frame support beams going up and are connected to metal joists to support the bells above. The Metal joists above also provide for large wooden planks to walk on to access the 2 bells. this can been seen in the pictures below.
This means bells 2 & 4 are hung above in an Z.3 frame in the 2.X1 layout. The 2 bells are positioned side my side and swing in the same direction.
Above the 2 & 4 are sound tubes which lead down to the intermediate chamber and through to the ringing as they were inaudible before due to their position.
The ringing room is accessed through a door under the tower and up an anticlockwise spiral staircase. It has an Ellacombe apparatus in the North West side of the tower and is fully functional which was made by John Warner & Sons and has a wooden plaque on it. From here, the belfry is up another flight of stairs. You will first come to the intermediate chamber and a metal ladder takes you to a trapdoor above. The entrance to the belfry is between bells 5 and 6.
From the ringing room the bells handle very differently with the four being the most difficult.
