1 Bell, in C
Elphick states the bell he saw in 1962 included the words "STAINBANK FOUNDERS" in the inscription, the rest of it couldn't be seen through his binoculars. This was obviously a Whitechapel bell from c1885.
Since George visited, this bell was replaced with the present day one.
The present bell was cast by James Barwell of Birmingham, and features no more than the founders mark on the waist.
Elphick show the "only" example of a confirmed Barwell bells in Sussex is the Chailey Heritage School, which carries the same inscription. Could this bell have been transferred to Handcross, and why?
The bell is hung on a cast iron headstock, attached by a Peg argent.
It is chimed by the means of a rope, connected to an iron lever. The bell is hung on ball bearings which don't appear to be overly rusted!
A 30 rung ladder would be required to access the bell.
