About the Bell
1 Bell
Iping Marsh has a single bell, hung in a west facing turret.
The church was built in 1878 to the design of E P L Brock, as a chapel of ease to Iping, St Mary.
It was no more than a marginal place, and therefore closed down in 1977. After being declared in 1980, it was demolished 6 years later. 100
The Church had a single bell that was supplied by Whitechapel.
It was probably no more than a stock bell as it was cast in 1874, 4 years before the church was built.
It measured 11.13" in diameter, and the clapper flight had a loop in it so it could be clocked.
This implies that the bell may have been hung dead.
Bells this small usually had a peg canon, like the one at East Grinstead, St Luke.
It was hung in a brick A frame and chimed by a rope.
It had a simple inscription around the inscription band reading:
1874
A 38-rung ladder was required to reach the bell. 101
All that remain is the burial ground.
