About the Bells
8 Bells, 24-2-23 in E♭
Worth Abbey has a chime of 8 bells hung dead in a west facing brick tower. The tower has a blue clock dial on all four sides of the tower.
Being a tower on a school premises, access to the tower is by special arrangement only and there is no access to the general public.
On the way up to the tower, a small bell cast by Warners in hung dead on display. It is painted black but the inscription remains bare bell metal. The tower is divided into 3 levels:
The first one you come to is the clock and ringing room. The clock was made by Gillett & Johnston and is caged. On each a quarter, a chiming barrel plays part of a short composition which is none of the standard clock chimes like the Westminster or Whittington chime. To ring the bells manually, a Baton Clavier or Klavier sits in the South East side of the tower. It is similar in appearance to the one at Copthorne. The wooden batons have the notes engraved on each along with the numbers to the corresponding bell. The apparatus may have come from a previous chime for the bells are in the key of E♭ whereas the Klavier shows the bells in the key of C.
The old clock weights are also in the room as the clock is now powered by motors.
Going up the tower further takes you to the intermediate chamber where the 4 clock dials are and also the links for the clock hammers branch off. The lighting is powered by a single dim light bulb.
On the roof of the tower are where the bells are hung. They are hung in cast iron B frame. From top to the bottom, left to right, the bells are in the order: 5,6,7,8. 1,2,3,4.
The bells were all made by Gillett & Johnston in the year 1921, same year as the clock. They all feature the same Gillett ornaments with the tenor being the odd one out. The tenor has a ring or ornaments above the inscription band and below, it also has a ring of ornaments above and below the soundbow moulding wires. These are shown below.
The circular trademark is present on each bell and can also be found on the bells at Ashdown Park.
The large Cowdray family coat of arms can be found on the waist of the tenor and the same coat of arms is also found on the sign for the pub down the road. It features a diver and a mexican man on either side of the shield.
An interesting feature that is also present on the inscriptions is that the lettering consists of an alphabet composed with dots. The bells were cast with flat tops and some are fixed to metal headstocks made purely of a joist whereas the others are strapped to wooden heastocks.
