About the Bell
1 Bell
Preston, St Alban had a single bell hung in a brick A frame.
It was cast by Mears & Stainbank in 1914 and measured 17.75" in diameter.
Observing from the photographs, we can see that the bell was bolted to a metal headstock by a peg canon. Pegs are a simple and useful way of fitting small bells to headstocks. It was also chimed by a lever.
The church was designed by L. W. Ridge and was built in 1910. It was completed in 1924. A bellcote (in this case an A Frame) was added on the east side. An tower at the west end with no bell inside was also erected. The church was entirely made of brick except from iron posts to support the roof.
In 2006, the church was closed due to structural issues and was later demolished in 2013.
