Robert Taylor & Sons
St Neots
1816 - 1821
Oxford
1821 - 1830
Together, Elizabeth and Robert had 6 children. Only two of them, William & John, became founders.
They joined their father at the foundry around 1816 - 1817, and we begin to see bells cast with
R TAYLOR & SONS FOUNDERS ST NEOTS
Occasionally, he would change the R to Robt.
In 1821, a fire broke out at the St Neots foundry, and him and his family moved to Oxford to set up a there. We then, of course, begin to see
OXFORD
instead of
ST NEOTS
inscribed on the bells.
Badby's tenor dated 1822 has both place inscribed.
Some of their later bells bear the date in roman numerals. The bell at Denton show how they used a J when the last figure was a 1.
Robert passed away aged 70 in April 1830, and was buried in Oxford, St Ebbe's churchyard.
We now take three different paths. Robert's sons worked together for a number of years. John moved to Devon but then returned to Oxford. In 1839, John moved to Loughborough leaving William in charge of the Oxford foundry. Upon William's death, the Oxford foundry closed, and John continued the growing the Loughborough foundry with his sons.
