About the Bell
1 Bell, 2lbs 8.2oz in AThe Ringing World National Youth Contest or more commonly known as RWNYC is an annual event for young ringers up till the age of 19 to compete against other teams across the nation. It is split into two groups: Method ringing and Change ringing and is scored out of 10. In order to ensure fairness, all the method ringing bands ring at the same tower and all the change ringing bands ring at another tower.
This year (2022), the contest was held at Exeter. Method ringing was carried out at Exeter, St Marks - a ring of 10 with the tenor being 12-1-9 in F#. Sussex rang Grandsire Doubles on the back 6.
Sussex was the 3rd band to compete of the day and we came first with 9 points out of 10!!
The band placement was: Katharine Quigley (Treble); Jonathan Martin (2); Samuel Canning (3); Francesco Greenslade (4); Michael Shaw (5); Kye Leaver (Tenor).
The method performed by Sussex was Grandsire Doubles conducted by Michael Shaw. As we won, I felt it was only right to include the trophy in The Bells of Sussex.
The bell itself was cast by The Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 2011 and is made of bronze. The inscription and moulding wires on the bell are all engraved. This could suggest that the bell had been cast without an inscription and after casting it was put on a lathe and the moulding wires were formed that way. The lettering and trademark appear to have been engraved by hand. The bell has a proper clapper in it and the wooden pedestal has a hole in the center to accept it. It was cast without canons and is bolted to a metal headstock. Between the headstock and the bell is a leather pad. The wooden base has 3 brass plaques that feature all the teams that have won in the past since 2011 with the exception of 2020. The last time Sussex won was in 2018 when they rang call changes. This was held in London. Before this, Sussex won to call changes at Birmingham in 2012. I am so incredibly proud of the Sussex team and all the other bands that participated! During the day, the clapper ball of the tenor at Exeter Cathedral came off mid ringing. This limited the rest of the ringing during the day to the front 11 bells. This occurred after we rang at the cathedral, so we weren't affected.
The 2021 RWNYC was held in Worcester and Sussex came 2nd. Andrew Meyer conducted a 180 of Grandsire Doubles with the same ringers on bells 1 and 6 as 2022.
In the inscription section below, the ◉ represents the engraved trademark stamp that can be seen in the photographs.
