About the Bells
6 Bells, 9-1-4 in A
Shipley has a ring of 6 bells hung neatly in a spacious belfry. The door to the belfry and ringing room is inside the church itself and t leads to some clockwise stone stair which lead you up to a junction which divides up three routes: to the belfry, the ringing room and also a narrow passage which leads to a window facing South
Inside the ringing room there are 6 red sallied ropes which are in the north side of the tower. In the southern part of the tower there is a ringing simulator which weighs 1cwt (50kg) which is rung from the ringing room and is used to teach new ringers on.
Another feature of the tower is the braces that hold the tower together: outside there are 4 black S shaped supports running from North to South which go through the ringing room and also another 2 S shaped supports which run from East to West through the belfry.
The belfry is wide and open with a safe amount of walk room while the bells are ringing.
The bells are hung in a timber W trussed 6.1 frame made by George Day & Sons in 1893 which has the inscription: GEORGE DAY & SON CHURCH BELL HANGERS EYE SUFFOLK 1893
In 1724 there were five bells in the tower. The tower is 12th century probably made of local sandstone and the top section of the tower was removed in 1830.
All the bells have grey canon retaining headstocks which were probably put on by Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Whitechapel Bell Foundry overhauled and tuned the bells in 2010.
In 1636, "The steeple wantes shingling very much."
