Shulbrede Priory
About the Bells
4 Bells, total 10-2-0 cwt
Shulbrede priory was located within a “thickly-wooded tract of country” and was far away from any main roads. The closest village to it was Lynchmere.
It was also known back then for weather conditions to be bad in Sussex which would have made it near impossible to reach.100
In 1478, Bishop Story visited the priory on July 27th, providing us some information regarding the belfry. It was in complete disrepair and would be highly unlikely that the bells were in a ringable condition. He gives:
“Item, the church belfry and chancel are very ruinous”.100
At the dissolution of 1536, there were 4 bells collectively weighing 10½ cwt. It was agreed that the bells were to be sold for 13s 4d per hundredweight to Mr William Medenwell. They were therefore sold to him for 7l, the equivalent of £3,088.
The collections give:
SHULBREDE “Of the price of four small bells there weighing 10½ cwts. in like manner sold by the Lord the King's Commissioners to William Medenwell at 13s. 4d. the cwt., as appears by a certain Indenture thereof made, seen, examined, and remaining-7l.” 101
