About the Bells
6 Bells, 9-1-7 in A
Storrington has a ring of 6 bells hung for full circle. The bells are hung in a West facing tower build in the mid 18th century.
The previous tower collapsed in 1746 which was caused by being weakened in 1731 by a lightning strike. This set the steeple on fire and fell. 110
The tower has a ground floor ring which has a guided long draught. They were rung from a gallery but this was removed. The bells are rung using 6 red, white and blue sallied ropes and are clockwise. A computer system is in the East side of the ringing room enables the ringers to silence the bells and use the ringing simulator.
In the North East corner is a door which leads up into the belfry. The door opens to a set of wide steps which lead to a vertical ladder. This takes you to the clock room.
The clock was made by J. W. Bensons Ltd of Ludgate Hill, London in 1879. It is painted green and is situated in the middle of the tower. It chimes on bell 4 and features a "Rack & Snail" on the movement to control the number of rings per hours instead of the more frequently seen "countwheel". The clock does not play the Westminster chime but does a "Ting Tang" which is just: 1.2...1.2...1.2...1.2.
The Ting Tang plays on bells 3 & 4 and the tenor strikes the hour.
In 1539, there was a bequest for repairs to the tenor and in in 1543, it is noted that there is a bequest for the bells in general. Elphick lists that there were 3 bells in 1724. 110
In 1760, a peal of 5 bells were cast by Lest & Pack of London. A bell chart in the inscription section shows what it reads.
In 1928, a treble was added by Mears & Stainbank in memory of Harold Pettitt. Harold was the Lay reader at St Mary's as was injured by a motorcyclist running into him. I will not go into too much detail as to what happened but he later died in Hospital as the injuries were too serious to work on.
These bells then stayed in the tower until 1978 when they were all recast by The Whitechapel Bell Foundry.
The treble still has the IN MEM: HAROLD PETTITT inscribed.
During my visit I recorded all the present inscriptions as George Elphick would not have noted these down. The old bell inscriptions are also listed below by Elphick.
The bells are hung in a timber W trussed frame in the 6.1 frame layout. The frame was most likely made by Mears & Stainbank in 1928 by there is no maker name or inscription on it anywhere.
Across the road from the church is the old CofE school. This has a small stone A frame which still has the old bearings but there is no longer a bell present. Elphick states that it is uninscribed and apparently by Warners. It was chimed by a lever.
