Tortington Priory
About the Bells
5 Bells, total 48cwt
Tortington Priory was dissolved in 1536. Most of the goods including the bells were sold off to Henry Lord Maltravers, 12th Earl of Arundel and his family. At the dissolution, there were 5 bells. It is a wonder where these all went but the likelihood is, one could have gone to Tortington, St Mary Magdalene. There is a medieval bell there inscribed:
S thomas treherne. It is unlikely this bell came from the priory due to the fact that the church was dedicated to St Thomas prior to the current St Mary Magdalene.
Although, in 1724, it was reported that the church had 2 bells so the other bell could have come from the priory. By 1864 there was just one.
Collectively, the bells weighed 48cwt and they were sold for 13s 4d per hundredweight.
Lord Maltravers agreed to the commissioners to buy the bells for 32l. In today's money, that would be the equivalent of around £14,120.
