About the Bells
6 Bells, 9-2-14 in A
Worth, St Nicholas has a full circle ring of 6 bells which are hung in a brick tower at the North East side of the church. The tower was made in 1872 by Anthony Salvin.
Anthony Salvin was an English architect who was born in 1799. He was very well known for having the reputation of being an expert in medieval buildings. He designed, build and even restored old buildings from country houses to castles.
When his wife died, he designed himself his own house in Fenhurst, Sussex. During this time he carried on doing his trade in Sussex.
Worth, St Nicholas was one of them.
In 1684, the church had 3 bells with another added to make a chime of 4 hung in a bellcote.
Before the present day tower, the bells were hung in a timber tower resting on tree trunks with 7 louvres and a spire of the same design of the current tower. It was in the middle of the North side of the church. Black and white photos below show what it looked like.
Before Worth had 6, it originally had 4 bells cast by C & J Oliver in 1844, C & J Oliver were a London bell foundry near Bethnal Green.
The bells present are a recast of the C & J Oliver bells using the same metal. The bells were recast by Gillett & Johnston in 1928 in a Diatonic key of A. All the bells have Flat heads and are bolted to red headstocks.
In 1997, the pulleys, wheels and clappers were refurbished and the frame was strengthened.
The bells are hung in a timber Z trussed frame from 1844. The frame sits on the belfry floor just 5ft above the ringers heads.
From the Ringing room, the bells are quite "Boomy" as they have a lot of clapper knock.
To get into the ringing room, one must enter through the door outside, then up a small stone spiral staircase. This leads you into the choir room. From this room you can see over over the church which is curtained. The choir room used to be the old ringing room before it was moved upstairs.
To get to the present day ringing room, you have to go up a wooden staircase on the North wall and through a trap door.
ACCESS TO THE BELFRY.....
All the bells are rung clockwise with green, blue and white sallied ropes which are of superb quality.
The expenses of m aking the fram e and the wheels, recasting the bells, and putting the whole up. cost £135, and the tim ber found by the parish.’
