About the Bell

1 Bell
Christ Church had a single bell hung in a spiky Gothic tower (identical to Chichester Cathedral), surrounded by bow-fronted houses.100 The bell was cast by Charles & George Mears of Whitechapel in 1850. It measured 34.13" in diameter and was hung for swing chime in a B frame.101
The architect was G. Cheeseman who designed the church to be stuccoed to fit in with its surroundings. It was built as a chapel of ease in 1838 at the cost of £4,600.
In 1886, the church was remodeled as the original interior was "bland and dull" consisting of a flat plastered ceiling and old-fashioned decor.
The church congregation was burned out in 1978, and it was declared redundant in 1981. It was demolished 2 years later. 100
