About the Bell

1 Bell, 12¼ cwt
St Margaret's was one of the more elaborate 19th-century chapels built in Brighton, being neo-classical in design.
It was built in 1824 and contained a single domed bell turret.
The bell was cast in 1824 by Thomas II Mears and likely hung dead, suspended with a conventional canon.
It must have been cracked for in 1875, it was recast by Mears & Stainbank. Depending on how it was hung, the crack may have been caused by the crown staple, or by being struck too hard. The bell weighed 12 and a quarter cwt.
The church was demolished in 1958 and the bell was recast to be used at Patcham, Christ the King.
