About the Bell

1 Bell in G
The former church of St Francis has a single bell and has been part of the church since December 12th 1957. The building was built as a chapel of ease for St Peter & St Paul's Chingford. Members of the community paid towards the build.
It is no longer used as a place of worship but is still used to hold events for the community.
The bell was cast by Mears & Stainbank in 1957 and the inscription contains 1" letters.
It features a simple inscription of just the date and the trademark (Fig. AWD,1) between.
The bell is bolted to a metal headstock and has no canons.
It is hung under a shelter and on plain bearings. Being outside, a metal dowel continues through the wall and into the hall. The rope is now inaccessible as it is located behind a cupboard. It is chimed by an internal lever and rope.
Observing inside the bell, it has been Simpson tuned and no evidence of turning has taken place.
The clapper is rusted due to the weather.
A 13 rung ladder is required to access the bell.
