About the Bell

1 Bell, 4-3-4 in Eb
Harpenden, St John's has a single bell hung dead on brackets.
The bell was cast by Mears & Stainbank in 1924 and chimes in the key of Eb. The bell is bolted to an iron headstock with no canons. The bell has been tuned as shown by the marks inside the bell.
The bell is clocked by a setup similar to our Gossops Green and Lowfield Heath where the rope is connected to a loop on the clapper shaft. The bell features a simple inscription with the foundry mark around the inscription band and a dedication to Mary, Hannah, and Rachel Bodsworth on the waist. Possibly a memorial.
A 12 & 28 rung ladder would be required.
