About the Bell

1 Bell
St Clement Halton Hastings had a single bell hung, hung in an A frame.
The church was built in 1839, largely at the cost of Countess Waldegrave, a local philanthropist.
There's some argument as to who designed it, but the likely story was that T. Catley, a local surveyer, came up with the initial plans, and G. Pownall & F. Wigg (London architects) developed it further.

A single bell was supplied by Thomas Mears of Whitechapel. According to Elphick, it measured around 15" in diameter, and bore a simple inscription reading:
THOMAS MEARS FOUNDER LONDON 1838
It was likely cast with a conventional canon and chimed by a level.
The only images we have come from drawings of the church, like the cover photo.

The total cost for church and fittings came to £150.
Unfortunately, nothing remains of the church as it was closed and pulled down in 1970.
