About the Bell

1 Bell
Ansty, St John is a former church which has a single bell hung in a timber A frame on the South West side of the church.
The church has now been converted into a house but still keeps everything close to original. The clock and bell still remain along with all the original windows.
The bell was cast in 1886 by John Warner & Sons of London. Like most bell cast by Warners during this era, the bell is strapped to a wooden headstock with a Doncaster Head. It appears that the bell has been quarter turned as there are two large patches of clapper wear 90 degrees from each other. The bell is unfortunately unringable since the bell rope had been cut which flies in the wind.
The church clock was probably made in 1943 as the clock was erected in memory of Louisa Best 1857 - 1943. A plaque in the wall to the right of the main door says this. The inscription is shown below.
According to Elphick, two 22 rung ladders would have to be required to gain excess to the bell, using modern technology one could use a cherry picker.
The bell probably chimes in the key of E but we don't know as the rope is cut.
