About the bell
1 Bell, in D
The earliest surviving reference to bells dates back to around 1440, when the present bell by William Chamberlain was cast. It features a Latin inscription followed by 3 shields.
It is hung in a B Frame made of steel joists, and chimed by a quarter wheel. I haven't been up to see this bell yet to give any additional info on it.
In 1676, the churchwardens' presentments show a bell was broken:
“Second presentment. There is one bell out of repaire, which wee promise to mend very speedily.”
This shows there was more than one, the present bell no doubt being one of them.
The survey from 1724 could tell us how many there were.
1724: "3 bells, one of which is crackt another without a wheel"
Between 1724 and 1825, two of the bells were removed from the belfry, and only the present bell is shown in both Tyssen and Elphick's book.
Access to the belfry is gained using a 20 and 10 rung ladder through a trap door.
