About the Bell

1 Bell
Shoreham, St Giles had a single bell hung for swing chime.
The bell was cast by John Warner & Sons and head the Latin phrase DEUS PASCIT CORVOS meaning God feeds the crows. After some search on the interenet, this phrase comes from Luke 12:24 from the bible. It was hung in a small timber A frame just 6 foot off the ground.
Interestingly enough, there is a stone A frame above the church which appears to be empty.
In 2022 there was no bell nor a timber A frame. This is most likely the result of a remodeling of the church. Either that or vandalism.
We may be able to guess the canon from the date and size of the bell. It could have either been a Doncaster, Conventional or a peg canon.
In 1886, the Doncaster Head was used at Ansty.
Later in 1896, they used a conventional canon at Worth Abbey.
Though the canon isn't that important, it is nice to be aware of their casting techniques.
