Towers & Bells

A-Z list of all places

Picture
Rings
Here you’ll find the peals of bells hung for English change ringing across Sussex. They range from a single bell to the county’s only full peal of twelve at East Grinstead. Some towers also include one or more extra bells outside the scale, allowing different combinations of bells to be rung.

Chimes
This section lists chimes of bells across Sussex. Unlike rings hung for change ringing, these bells are usually played in sequence from a chiming mechanism or swung individually by a lever. Many are hung dead (fixed in position), making them suited to tunes and simple melodies rather than change ringing.

Roman Catholic
Most of our county's RC churches contain bells, usually inscribed in Latin and ornate. The only rings we're aware of are at Storrington & Eastbourne. In our neighbouring county of Hampshire, there's an octave peal at Portsmouth, St Agatha.

Secular Places
Secular places will include locations such as clock towers, town halls, museums, and other historic buildings. More often than not, access to the bells and clocks is far more interesting than in churches. Birchington, Quex Park, Kent, contains a quirky peal of twelve under private ownership.

Lost Places & Bells
This includes bells and places that have been destroyed or demolished, where we are fortunate enough to know their fate or have sufficient information about their bells. Unfortunately, Sussex lost its only other twelve at Hove Town Hall in a fire in 1966.

Mini Rings
These are generally domesticated rings of bells, although a few mini rings are found in churches. South Stoneham is a good example where they have a peal of 3 bells in the tower, and a ring of 12, named The Hartley Twelve, in the main body of the church.
